Hi Book Club Members:
If you are thinking of forming a book club or need new activities/recipes for your book club, please go to my blog for additional ideas. The following are ideas for Levels of Truth, but may be easily adapted to your book choice. Discussion Questions for Levels of Truth
1. The importance of family is one of themes. How do you think Caroline would define “Family?” How would you define “family?”
2. Kayaking is an important activity for Caroline and David. How does their relationship change after kayaking?
3. Compare Caroline’s life in Seattle to her time in Lakeside. Why would she be willing to leave her Seattle lifestyle?
4. What prompts Caroline to stay and help Larkin and Ryan.?
5. Small towns are popular setting for romance and women’s fiction. What characters do you expect in a small town? What are advantages of a small town setting?
6. Why is David now able to “let go” of Joy? What are his expectations of his relationship with Caroline?
7. Were you surprised that Megan is Caroline’s mother? When did you realize their connection? What clues are evident throughout the story?
8. Why did Annabelle choose to lie about visiting a spa and why did she not tell Caroline the truth about her past?
9. How would you react if your mother or father lied about an important event? What prompts Caroline to travel to New Jersey?
10. Were you adopted, would you want to meet your natural parents? Were you a parent who gave up a child to be adopted, would you want to meet that child ever? Should adoption records be closed?
11. Were you to meet a character, what would you ask? Which character would you like to meet?
12. Discuss Caroline and Tina’s friendship? Do you have a best friend with whom you share secrets and adventures? What are qualities of a good friend?

Recipes for Levels of Truth

Crab, Clams, Corn and Jersey tomatoes are staples in the summer and fall in New Jersey.
Caroline likes Clams Casino from the Townline Inn in Chapter 7. Clams Casino would be a good appetizer for reading group.
Caroline brings a tortellini salad to David’s Memorial Day picnic in Chapter 18. One recipe for Clams Casino
The best clams are the Littleneck or Cherrystone. They slide down the throat as demonstrated by David. Recipe which follows are for two dozen clams. They are small and are devoured quickly.

Ingredients:
2 dozen clams
½ pound of bacon
2 tbs. of unsalted butter
1/3 cup of chopped shallots
2 cloves of garlic chopped
1/3 c. of chopped red peppers
2tbs. of grated Parmigiano cheese
½ cup of breadcrumbs
1. Arrange clams on rimmed baking sheet. Broil until clams pop open. (Usually 5-8 minutes) Discard those who don’t open. Let cool until easily handled. Pry off top and loosen clam in bottom shell. Pour clam juice in bottom of pan into a separate measuring cup. Set aside juice and clams to cool. 2. Finely chop shallots, garlic, and red peppers 3. Melt butter in skillet on medium heat. Add shallots ,garlic and red pepper cooking until tender. 4. Add white wine and cook until liquid is reduced in half. (Usually 2 minutes) 5. Pour clam juice evenly over clams. Mix bread crumbs and parmesan cheese. And sprinkle over clams. 6. Top each clam with several bacon strips and broil for about five minutes.
Tortellini Salad
Ingredients
1 20 oz package of refrigerated cheese tortellini
¼ c of olive oil
¼ c of red wine vinegar
½ tsp of dried oregano
1 tbsp. of jar garlic (jar or fresh)
Any combination of the following: grape tomatoes, ½ c of chopped Green pepper, ½ c of chopped red onion, 1 jar of marinated Artichoke hearts drained and chopped, 1 can of sliced black olives, 1 c of fresh cooked corn. Add 1-2 cups of one of the following cheeses: feta, shredded mozzarella, or shredded parmesan.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Bring one large pot of water to boil. Cook cheese tortellini according to directions. Drain, rinse with cold water and place in large bowl.
2. Whisk together olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano and garlic. Set aside.
3. Choose any combination of the vegetables/fruits above. Choose ones the group enjoys.
4. Add vegetables to the tortellini and pour created dressing over salad.
5. Choose one cheese and shake over the top. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours before serving. Refrigerate leftovers.
